Every Green Job in Scotland Spawns 28 Others

Scotland’s green jobs are multiplying faster than anyone expected.

Every 10 green jobs created in Scotland generates 28 additional positions elsewhere in the economy. That’s a multiplier effect of 2.8, higher than the UK’s national average of 2.7.

This economic ripple effect helps explain why Scotland continues dominating Britain’s green job market for the fourth consecutive year.

The Regional Leadership Gap Widens

Scotland’s 5.6% share of green job advertisements significantly outpaces the UK average of 3.5%. Northern Ireland follows at 4%, with London at 3.7%.

Even the lowest-performing regions have doubled their green job demand since 2021. Wales sits at 2.7% while North East England reaches 2.4%.

Growth patterns show environmental skills are becoming mainstream rather than niche specializations.

Construction Leads The Transformation

Traditional industries are reshaping faster than expected. Construction shows the most dramatic shift with a 62.8% increase in green job advertisements since 2023.

Green roles now represent 6.9% of all construction positions advertised. That’s 4.3 times larger than the 1.6% share recorded in 2021.

The professional, scientific, and technical activities sector maintains the highest concentration at 8.3% green roles.

The energy sector now leads with 45% of job advertisements classified as green, up from just 21.1% in 2021. This sector shows the highest employment multiplier at 9.2.

Market Resilience Defies Economic Headwinds

The UK’s overall job market contracted by 22.5% in 2024. Yet green job advertisements increased by 9.2%, reaching 272,178 roles.

That’s more than double the 124,600 green positions first recorded in 2021.

Green jobs buck economic trends. While traditional sectors shed positions, green roles expand.

The Skills Premium Emerges

Companies are embedding sustainability into their hiring strategies, not just their marketing.

PwC’s definition includes both direct environmental roles and positions supporting the green economy indirectly. Environmental advisors, education specialists, and technical consultants all qualify.

This green transition requires expertise across diverse professional domains, not just renewable energy engineers.

Even retail shows this shift. Green roles in retail jumped 71.8% to 31,277 positions in 2024. That’s 5.5 times larger than the sector’s 2021 baseline.

What This Means Moving Forward

Scotland’s upcoming GB Energy headquarters and concentration of floating offshore wind projects position the nation for continued leadership.

The multiplier effect suggests green job creation generates broader economic benefits than traditional employment. Each environmental role creates nearly three additional positions.

For professionals, the message is clear: start building environmental expertise now. The sectors transforming fastest offer the highest multiplier effects.

Don’t wait for your industry to announce its green transition. By then, the premium positions will be filled.
